So it was a performance enhancement technique for people who needed to deliver hours of argument from memory. Not a clinical intervention.
Right. And that's worth sitting with, because it reframes the whole category. The most famous memory technique in history was invented by and for people with exceptional cognitive demands. It was never about compensation for decline. It was about extending capacity.
So how does a memory palace actually help someone like Daniel, who's trying to remember to grab his keys and wallet and phone before leaving the house?
This is where it gets interesting. The method of loci is traditionally for retrospective memory. For memorizing lists, speeches, facts. But you can adapt it for prospective tasks. It is. And for someone with ADHD, that upfront investment can be a barrier. The checklist is zero cost to learn. You just write it and use it. The problem is the discipline to consult it. So the checklist is cheap to install but costs you every time you use it. The memory palace is expensive to install but free to run.
That's a clean way to put it. And the ADHD brain that needs the checklist is the same brain that forgets to look at the checklist. That's the trap.

Explain that conversion.
A prospective task is: remember to grab your keys before you leave. That requires holding the intention in working memory until the moment of action. A retrospective task is: where are my keys? That's a fact that's stored in long-term memory. If the keys are always in the bowl, the answer to where are my keys is always the same. The bowl. You don't need to remember to grab them. You just need to know where they are, and the fixed location removes the retrieval step entirely.
So the bowl doesn't help you remember to take the keys. It makes the question of where the keys are so trivial that you don't need prospective memory at all.
Right. You've eliminated the failure point rather than trying to strengthen the system at the failure point.
Daniel mentioned two specific transition points. Leaving the house and leaving the car. Those are different failure pattern.
They are, and this is a subtle point that most advice misses. Context transitions reset attention. When you move from one environment to another, house to car, car to destination, your brain has to reorient. New environment, new set of relevant information. And at that moment of transition, whatever was in working memory from the previous context gets wiped.

Context-specific, and placed at the point of transition. The aid for leaving the house goes by the door. The aid for leaving the car goes on the dashboard, or somewhere that's in your visual field as you're getting out.
There's a deeper insight here that I think is the actual answer to Daniel's question. People with ADHD aren't bad at remembering. They're bad at remembering at the right moment.
That's exactly right.
The information is in there. Daniel knows he has keys. He knows he needs them. The failure is that the knowledge doesn't surface at the moment when it's actionable. It surfaces two blocks later, or when he's already locked the door and is reaching for his pocket.
And external aids work when they interrupt the moment of absorption. The note on the door isn't there to teach you anything. It's there to break the flow of whatever you were thinking about and inject the reminder at the exact moment you need it.
So the aid isn't a memory substitute. It's an interruption device.
A well-designed one is. And that's why the stigma is so counterproductive. If using an aid feels like admitting defeat, you're less likely to place the interruption where it needs to go. You'll keep the checklist in a drawer, or in an app, and it won't catch you at the door. The stigma doesn't just make you feel bad. It makes the aid less effective, because you hide it away.
And the cost isn't just emotional. Daniel mentioned the cumulative time. If the average person loses even a few minutes a day to object retrieval, patting pockets, scanning counters, walking back to the car, that adds up. Over a lifetime, that's weeks. Months, maybe.

So the mix is: fixed locations for the daily items, interruptions for the context-specific items, and mnemonics for the sequences and one-offs.
And the key is that each layer is designed for a different failure pattern. The fixed locations handle the most frequent failures. The interruptions handle the transition failures. The mnemonics handle the complex sequences. You're not relying on any single system.
Which is the failover Daniel was talking about. Redundancy across different mechanisms, so when one drops something, another one catches it.
And the redundancy isn't just about having multiple aids. It's about having aids that work through different cognitive channels. The bowl works through habit and spatial memory. The images have to be vivid, though. A boring image doesn't stick.
The more absurd the better. A key the size of a surfboard. A wallet that's on fire. A phone that's screaming. The brain remembers the weird, the emotional, the exaggerated. The ancient Greeks knew this. The more vivid the image, the more reliably it surfaces.
So the method of loci works because it hijacks spatial memory, which is extremely robust, and emotional memory, which is extremely sticky.
It works automatically, once the route is established. That's the crucial difference from a checklist. The checklist requires an act of will. The memory palace runs on the same automatic system that lets you walk through your house in the dark without thinking about where the furniture is.
How long does it take to establish?
For a simple three-location route, maybe twenty minutes of deliberate practice. You walk the route a few times, you place the images, you test yourself. After a few days of using it, it becomes automatic. The upfront cost is real, but it's small compared to the cost of the failures it prevents.
The cost of the failures is what Daniel opened with. The dollars for every time he's been held up. The cumulative time.
If you spend five minutes a day looking for things, that's over thirty hours a year. Over a working lifetime, that's months. And that's just the retrieval time. It doesn't count the stress, the frustration, the missed buses, the late arrivals.

The answer to Daniel's question is: the mix is fixed locations for the daily items, a two-second ritual at each transition point, and a memory palace for anything more complex. And the whole thing works because it's designed for the failure pattern, not for the ideal case.
The ideal case is a trap. If you design your system for the day when you're well-rested, focused, and unhurried, it will fail on every other day. You have to design for the worst case. The distracted day. The rushing day. The day when your working memory is full of something else entirely.

There's a story about the business of selling memory aids that I think cuts right to the heart of this.

They sold the exact same techniques, but rebranded them as performance enhancement.
Hilbert: That was the whole business model. Same method of loci the Greeks used. Same peg systems. But the marketing said: elite performers use this to get ahead. It was a status product. The word memory aid never appeared in any of the materials. It was cognitive optimization. Peak mental performance.
The stigma was part of the pitch. You're not compensating for anything. You're enhancing.
Hilbert: The customers paid three thousand dollars for a weekend seminar. They'd have paid nothing for a memory aid. They paid for the story that they were already good and getting better.
